The Royal Islander, Cancun, Mexico

The Royal Islander in Cancun is a great place to stay on the beach in the Hotel Zone of Cancun.  We had a two-bedroom/two-bathroom timeshare unit that we very much enjoyed.  The balconies are very large with lots of space to move around and watch the waves of the turquoise Caribbean waters.  The balcony has two lounge chairs and a table with 4 chairs and there is plenty more space for other furniture.

The C shape of the building, opening up to the beach and water is fairly typical of the Royal Resorts.  This way every unit gets an ocean view and the pool areas are in the center of the C shape.

The kitchens are very well equipped so that you can make most types of meals.  This kitchen does include an oven which a lot of Mexican timeshares do not.  There is a large dining area and living room which has access to the balcony.  Each bedroom side includes a large walk-in closet, and the sink area which is quite large is separated from the tub and the toilet area.  This allows two people to get ready at the same time and I think it is a great design.  The primary bedroom has access to the large balcony area.

There are a lot of activities at this resort.  It can be as busy or as laid back as you wish.  The staff is very well trained and managed at the Royals.  There is a great little Marketplace to pick up any groceries that you might need.  If you will be making your own meals most of the time, you can hop on the Royal shuttle to the Royal Sands and walk 5 minutes to the Soriana grocery store in the Kukulcan Mall and then walk back and hop back on the shuttle back to the Royal Islander.

You can sign out stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, sailboats etc but you will have to go to the Royal Sands Marina to take part in these activities.  The beach has taken a hit in the last few years due to the hurricanes that have passed by.  It was nice to see that there was about an extra 10 feet of sand than last year on the beach.

The Royal Islander has been a great place for our family to stay over the years.  We have been coming here since 1995 so it is sad to me that it will be changing hands next year and the Royal Islander will be no more.
