Biking the Beach at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

If I were to describe pure joy it is walking, biking or hiking and exploring new areas in the world.  Today we biked the beach at Hilton Head South Carolina.  I know this sounds weird because who can bike on a beach through the sand?

At Hilton Head when the tide goes out the Atlantic Ocean leaves the beach with hard-packed sand.  It is the smoothest ride you will ever experience  It is euphoria for me biking North with the wind behind my sails and the sun at my back.  The beach is wide and free of obstacles.  In fact, the beach is so wide that you can easily maneuver around people.  Occasionally you will spot a dead Horseshoe Crab and you have to stop to look at it.

Horseshoe Crabs are so big and absolutely prehistoric looking.  Apparently, they have blue blood and you can't eat them.

What a shame.

Or you will spot a live blue crab.

Even the dogs that are walking with their people have an extra bounce in their step.  Even dogs get it, they love the beach.  It is a hard beach to be in a bad mood on.  This beach just feels free to me.

We have been to Hilton Head before and biked the beach and I could not wait to get back and do it again.  There are 13 miles of almost uninterrupted beach.

Every so often you can find beach access to get back onto the roads.  Hilton Head is considered a muy bike-friendly island with excellent trails around the whole island.  We like to go somewhere different each time.

There are sand dunes and birds and beautiful homes to gawk at along the beach bike ride.  There is always something to look at.

We wandered onto this sand trail to get back to the roads and we saw some lovely new homes in a new development.

There are public beach access points all along the beach like this one below.

Now that I have explained to you why I love to bike the beach so much, I will let you know that on your return trip heading South is not near as much fun.  You have to contend with the wind in your face and it is strong enough to make your return trip 4 times harder.  The good thing about this is you don't have to go to the gym and work out the day you bike the beach.  Your quads will be like rubber when you get off that bike because you will have worked them well.

This is a great experience on Hilton Head Island and bike rentals are very affordable.
