Savannah Georgia
If you are a history buff, this is the city for you to see. We have been here before and a lot of my reasons for first visiting Hilton Head Island was because we had to fly into Savannah, Georgia. I am fascinated with Civil War History and this place is steeped in it. I even took an American History class based on these turbulent years because I love history so much.
Savannah is a very walkable city with River Street and its beautiful views of the Savannah River with passing ships to watch. River street is covered in old cobblestones so watch where you walk. There are many things to see on this street.
Dockside Restaurant is the oldest building in Savannah and dates back to the early 1700s. Inside it has low wood beams and resembles an ancient English pub.
The Savannah Squares, 22, to be exact are beautiful and you can spend a lot of time in each one. The historic squares each with stately sculptures and beautiful landscaping of flowers and trees usually have benches to sit and reflect. These squares are part of the allure of Savannah. These squares have the most beautiful old historic homes and mansions. In two visits I still have not seen them all.
I could take a picture of each of the houses on the Savannah Squares as they are each so gorgeous.
There are numerous things to do and tours to take in Savannah, but there is not enough time to do it all. The historical beauty of this city, unfortunately, came from the wealth that was accrued due to human slavery. It still is hard for me to fathom that mankind would do this to another human being. Cotton was king here.
The Spanish Moss gives another dimension to the way you feel in Savannah. It gives such an old-world look to the place, see below.
