Daley Ranch Park- Cougar Pass Trailhead, Escondido California

Discovering the trailhead just an 11-minute drive from our accommodations in scenic Escondido, California was a delightful surprise. The journey through the picturesque hills unfolded into an adventure as we transitioned from paved roads to gravel and meandered along high cliff roads, albeit a bit nerve-wracking without guard rails.

Free parking awaited us across the road from the trail entrance, setting the stage for our exploration. While the availability of dog poop bags at the entrance was a thoughtful touch, it seems not all pet owners are responsible, leaving us to navigate around more than a few regrettable surprises along the way.

The trail, though not without its challenges, presented a unique charm. Strewn with small rocks, it demanded a bit of attention while walking. The inclines were steep, providing a workout, and although we never quite reached the summit, the trail unfolded with panoramic views of the valley that made the effort worthwhile.

Embarking on this hike twice, once with my friend Corinne and another time with Darren, allowed me to appreciate the trail's nuances. I'd certainly recommend this trek, with a minor caveat—opt for a rain-free day. While we encountered two spots with tiny creeks during our trek, navigable with strategically placed stones, I could imagine the potential for a post-rain scenario turning them into more challenging, muddy crossings.
