Felanitx and Portocolom, Mallorca Spain

Portocolom, Mallorca
Our journey to Felanitx promised an authentic Spanish market experience at the Sunday market. Regrettably, it fell short of expectations, as non-Spanish vendors dominated, offering primarily imported clothes. Despite this setback, the town's centrepiece, a charming church surrounded by a cascade of stairs, provided a picturesque highlight.

The stairs to the church were full of intricate designs.

Our exploration of Felanitx uncovered some more disappointments. The old convent, though architecturally intriguing, displayed signs of neglect with substantial structural issues. Its potential allure was overshadowed by the urgent need for restoration.

Felanitx, overall, left a bittersweet taste. The town seemed to lack the meticulous upkeep found in other Spanish villages. Garbage in the streets and a general lack of pride in the local buildings painted a picture of a town in need of revitalization. The market, initially the main attraction, proved lacklustre. Yet, we managed to salvage the day with a leisurely stroll through the city and its squares.

This is a mystery.  It resides in front of the church.

Undeterred, we pressed on to Portocolom on the east coast, a quaint seaside village that welcomed us with a significant German influence. Dining at a charming German restaurant in the harbour, I had the chance to practice my limited German with the friendly Fraulein who recommended an excellent Mallorcan white Sav Blanc. The surrounding vineyards hinted at the potential for wine tastings, an activity we would have pursued had we been with another couple who enjoy wine.

In Portocolom, we encountered another town with untapped potential. The village's natural beauty and seaside charm were evident, yet it yearned for a visionary leader to spearhead improvements. With proper attention and care, Portocolom could transform into a breathtaking destination, though it seemed content with its current allure, unbothered by the lure of increased tourism.

Our journey through Felanitx and Portocolom offered a blend of missed opportunities and hidden gems. These experiences underscored the pivotal role community engagement and visionary leadership play in shaping the destiny of these picturesque Spanish towns.
