We ventured to Porto Cristo on Mallora's eastern coast, lured by the promise of exploring the mysterious Drach Caves.
Aiming to soak in the surroundings, we strolled along the seafront of Porto Cristo, settling in at a laid-back restaurant to share a moment over some Vino and Coke, absorbing the beauty of the Mediterranean waters.

The water was very pretty and a lovely colour. |
We went to the Information kiosk to ask a few questions and she let us know that it was only a 12-minute walk to the caves and that Rafael Nadal's yacht was in the harbour and his mansion was the big long one up on the rocks. We took a photo of the hometown hero of Mallorca and his boat. |

We walked to the caves and purchased our entrance for 17.50 euros each. The caves were different than we have seen before because Lake Martel one of the biggest underground lakes in the world is part of Drach Caves. The Drach Caves were quite prolific with stalactites and stalagmites. Due to the water in the caves, the pervasive humidity was uncomfortably high. I felt like a wet noodle until we walked to the larger underground room, the discomfort gave way to awe. All of the water that is in the caves has seeped in through the rocks and it is salt water. These caves were a bit more well-lit, so much better for taking photos. |
The water is crystal blue turquoise color and highly reflective. |

The pools of water are ever-present in the caves. |

This ribbon stalactite was stunning. |
Toward the end of the tour, we were seated in the underground cave auditorium to listen to a live concert. They darkened the entire cave and a boat aglow with light, gently glided towards the crowd and the 4 piece orchestra began to play symphony music. They played 5 pieces for us and it was marvelous as they sailed around the lake. We were not allowed to take pictures unfortunately as your phone screen would have lit up the whole cave. Enveloped in darkness listening to beautiful music resonating in this cavernous chamber. It was a surreal moment.
We walked back to Porto Cristo and found a restaurant overlooking the ocean river called Salvador where we had supper and then walked back to our car and drove home. |
The restaurant had great views. |
