Ushuaia, Argentina - Patagonia and the End of the World

Exploring the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, turned out to be a delightful surprise. Contrary to expectations, the city greeted us with an explosion of colourful flowers, with the envious Lupins stealing the show. Strolling through the streets of this city, home to 80,000 people, we embarked on a quest for unique finds. Lisa's acquisition of a Rose Quartz trinket, exclusive to southern Argentina, and my choice of a T-shirt as a keepsake reflected the charm of this breathtaking place.
Why can't I grow Lupins like these?

No clue what this tree was?

Ushuaia's historical transformation from a penal colony to a thriving tourist destination fascinated us. Once a haven for Argentina's worst criminals, it has evolved into the Gateway to the Antarctic, thanks to the presence of the Argentinian Navy now calling it home.

Cool building depicting a prison breakout.

Our visit to a local pub took an unexpected turn when we were politely asked not to sit by the windows due to an impending protest. Glancing at the news on the TV, we learned that the largest labour union in Argentina was staging protests across multiple cities.

Soldiers were out in full force to quell any unrest that the protest may cause.

With a quick exit, we headed to a taxi stand, where we arranged a journey into Tierra Del Fuego National Park for a Patagonian hiking adventure—a long-cherished dream of mine.

The breathtaking scenery never stops.

The three-hour tour, surprisingly affordable at around 115 dollars for the four of us, unfolded with numerous stops allowing us to soak in breathtaking views and engage in invigorating hikes. A particularly memorable encounter occurred during the first stop, where a fox, clearly accustomed to the presence of tourists, approached us in search of a treat.

Each subsequent stop in the national park unveiled panoramic vistas reminiscent of the captivating landscapes in Jasper or Banff, Canada.

4th stop and my favourite

My model Darren, not bad for 64.

As the day drew to a close, we returned to the ship, eagerly anticipating a sumptuous dinner and the commencement of our journey towards the ethereal beauty of Antarctica.
