Palm Desert Cross - Hiking Trails - The Warren and Mary Slaughter Recreational Area in Palm Desert California.

This was a great hiking trail but it was a bit confusing where to begin.  There is an extremely large parking lot that runs along the water ditch with multiple free parking spaces.  Next time I would park at the far right end and begin the trail there which takes you straight up the hill.  We parked in the middle and wandered around until we found a trailhead which we walked up an extremely steep old asphalted road.

This shrub smelled divine and perfumed the air all along the base of the hike.  It did not grow any higher up the hill.

The father of my friend Reanne had just recently passed and we were unable to go to the funeral which was the day we did this hike.  We were in California so we hiked up to the Cross and said our goodbyes to Roy up on the mountain.  It was a steep climb and skirted a rather large private property and eventually, we reached the cross.  It is most likely quite cool to see at night as it is lined with multiple light bulbs that are powered by solar panels.

Darren is walking up the steep asphalt road for the first 25% of the hike up.  The rest is dirt and rock.

Taking a breather.

Pretty rocks and wildflowers were along the way.

Overlooking Greater Palm Springs.

At the top of Palm Desert Cross Trail and the Cross is in the background.

Dust is closing in on us.

We chose a long way down the mountain which took almost twice as long to go down as it did to go up.  There was a bit of a sand storm brewing and the skyline was very dusty looking but the breeze was appreciated on the hot day.

I would recommend this trail, it was a good workout.  As usual, there were younger and skinnier people jogging up and running down the trail.  Personally, I don't have a death wish so we stuck to walking up and down the mountain and we probably had more fun?
